Steampunk style bathroom

Considered for a long time an alternative and niche style, steampunk has now become one of the most popular even among interior designers and private consumers, also thanks to the influence of films, comics, anime, and TV series that use Victorian settings in a dark vein.

Origins and definitions of this style

Born in the mid-1980s, the style drew upon science fiction novels that revisited the Victorian era in a dark and eccentric mood. In steampunk décor, the dark London atmospheres of 19th century England are infused with Gothic and a passion for mechanical elements. The term steampunk, in fact, comes from the word “steam” with a clear reference to the industrial revolution and machines.

The steampunk style in furniture recaptures Victorian atmospheres with a noir twist.

The tenets of this style are:

  • Colours: dark tones such as black, dark grey or brown are preferred, with burgundy, dark green and sepia in second place;
  • Materials: preferred for wall coverings are bricks or wallpapers with brick effects and motifs inspired by machine gears. As for furnishing elements, green light is given to leather, hide and objects with metal inserts. Also welcome are big clocks, industrial style lamps and machinery, such as compasses or sewing machines, which are used as furnishing objects.

A steampunk bathroom

But how can a steampunk bathroom be furnished? In a room in this style, glossy or matt black sanitary ware is to be favoured over glossy white. It would be preferable to opt for more classic lines over modern ones. In Flaminia’s catalogue you can choose from a range of Old England models, such as the Efi collection, available in white, milky white or glossy black, which are also perfect with the walnut wood toilet seat.  Whether combined with a backpack cistern or with a tall cistern with exposed pipes, Efi toilets and bidets are even more characteristic than flush-to-wall models. For a more contemporary effect, one can choose the Madre collection, which reinterprets classic styles from a modern perspective. For the shower area, the ideal solution would be a classic design freestanding bathtub with metal claw feet like the Evergreen model. For the washbasins, the Boll model, which recalls the antique bowls and basins in glossy black, Charcoal Grey or Mud Brown, is a very appropriate solution.

For the furniture, options with metal frames are to be preferred, such as the Filo collection in matt black steel and the Denver washbasin console. Cubika furniture with metal drawer frames in Eucalyptus and Greek Walnut wood finishes can also be good choices. For furniture with a wood finish and parquet floors, it is advisable to choose dark hues rather than bleached or natural wood.
