The evolution of modern bathroom design

The industrial production of high-end sanitary ware and bathroom furniture is driven by the evolution of design and the demands of the market. Originally, the bathroom was seen as a merely functional space, a world away from aesthetic concerns. The evolution of bathroom design and proposals, in contrast to traditional models, began with the economic boom of the 1960s, when the first coloured sanitary ware and bathroom fittings were produced, making colour into a significant element of product manufacturing. The 1970s were characterised by the development of new lines and extensive research into the shapes of sanitary ware. Unusual and innovative shapes for fixtures and fittings began to appear on the market.

Growing demand for coloured ceramic sanitary ware featuring unconventional lines led Flaminia to create new models, ideally suited for a modern bathroom, veritable ornamental series far removed from classic lines. Blue became a predominant colour and sanitary ware began to be seen as a furnishing element, precisely because the bathroom was no longer perceived as a purely functional room but rather as an environment on a par with the other rooms in the home. The 1980s, on the other hand, saw little experimentation, the shapes of sanitary ware were mostly soft and rounded.

The 1990s marked a revolution for Flaminia, and the company brought innovation to the market in terms of product design: freestanding washbasins, hideaway mountings for wall-hung sanitary ware, washbasins in new shapes and sizes, modular flush shower trays . These innovative proposals created new product categories and engendered a new aesthetic outlook in the market. From 2000 onwards, production focused more and more on design, resorting to collaborations with many international designers. Over the last 20 years, challenges in the industry have mainly concerned the environmental sustainability of the products and the production processes as well as process automation, challenges that Flaminia faced up to successfully.

Today’s bathroom is undoubtedly designed with a great focus on aesthetics, but it is also functional, and product design takes into account many previously unknown variables, such as sustainability, comfort, materials quality and technical efficiency

Nowadays, the bathroom is one of the most attractive and most important rooms in terms of style and it is also considered a veritable calling card for public and commercial spaces.
