Sculptural, sophisticated, iconic. Hellas, the new Flaminia countertop washbasin unveiled at Cersaie 2026, brings contemporary elegance into the bathroom. Designed by Jangir Maddadi, it revisits the vocabulary of classical architecture through a contemporary and rigorous design language.
In this article we look at where Hellas comes from, what makes it recognisable, which colours it comes in and how to bring it into a contemporary bathroom project.
Classical architecture with a contemporary twist
The name says it all: Hellas looks to ancient Greece and its architectural vocabulary. Fluted columns, regular rhythms and measured proportions are the references from which the aesthetic of this washbasin takes shape.
The aim, however, is not literal quotation. Hellas grows out of the interplay between references to the classical tradition and a modern vision: a countertop washbasin with a distinctive presence, where the compactness of the volume meets an exterior treatment with a strong architectural character.
The result is a timeless object, equally at home in classically styled interiors and in bathrooms with a more contemporary design.
Rigour and fluidity: the three elements of the design
The character of Hellas comes from the balance between three elements.
- The continuous rim. The circular form is framed by a full, regular rim that precisely defines the perimeter of the washbasin and emphasises its solidity.
- The exterior bas-reliefs. A regular sequence of bas-relief details runs around the side, recalling the fluting of a column. This is where the washbasin interacts with the light: the reliefs create a play of shadows and reflections that changes throughout the day, making the surface feel alive and tactile.
- The inner basin. Inside, the basin opens into a soft, welcoming geometry, in sharp contrast with the rigour of the exterior.
It is precisely this balanced contrast between rigour and fluidity that makes Hellas a sculptural object, to be admired from every angle.
Dimensions and colours
Hellas is a round countertop washbasin measuring 46 cm in diameter and 14 cm in height. Its compact proportions make it suitable for both main bathrooms and guest bathrooms, as a single or double basin.
The washbasin is available in Flaminia’s palette of glossy and matt colours.
In glossy colours, the bas-reliefs catch the light and multiply the reflections; in softer shades, the play of shadows becomes subtler and more refined.
Jangir Maddadi, the designer behind Hellas
Jangir Maddadi works across furniture, lighting, sculptural objects and public space design. His approach always starts from understanding the object: how it is used and why it exists. From this analysis, form, materials and proportions emerge naturally.
His projects have been installed in airports, embassies, retail spaces and public places, including Hong Kong Central Station. His work has received international recognition such as the German Design Award and the New York Design Award, and in 2010 he was named New Entrepreneur of the Year by H.M. King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden. His creations have also appeared in the film Men in Black 3.
His first design to go into production, the Union Bench, was installed at the United States Embassy in Stockholm. It was later recognised as an object of cultural significance by the Embassy’s Office of Cultural Heritage and added to its collection for its artistic value, relevance and provenance.
With Hellas, Maddadi brings the same approach to the bathroom: an everyday object that, through its architectural character, takes on the presence of a small sculpture.
Hellas: the elegance of the line
With Hellas, Flaminia and Jangir Maddadi show that a countertop washbasin can be much more than a functional element. The memory of classical architecture, translated into a contemporary language, turns an everyday gesture into an encounter with the beauty of design.
