The rimless wc: Flaminia’s GoClean®

Over the years, the on-going search for innovative products and systems for the bathroom has led the companies in the sector to study and implement new flushing systems.

From this constant commit to product R&D came the rimless wc that immediately met with favour in the market, offering numerous advantages:

–       The bowl is much easier to clean

–       Greater hygiene in the bowl

–       Flushing is less noisy

–       Water saving

Discovering the rim

What is a rim? A rim is the inner ceramic edge of a toilet bowl, which originally helped distribute the flush water over the entire surface of the WC.

And what is a rimless wc? Essentially, it means that the inner surface of the bowl is smooth, without any hard to reach parts or ceramic edges where dirt may build up.

Cleaning a toilet bowl with a rim is much harder compared to a rimless one: reaching beneath the protruding edge with a sponge or with a toilet brush is near to impossible, other than by making use of a special toilet cleaner with a spout.

A brief history of the brim

Until the 1980-90s, the toilet bowls on the market used a flushing system that included a flushing rim. But with this arrangement, the water tubes and the flush holes in the rim would get clogged with the limescale and dirt building up inside.

The 1990-2000s saw the advent of the so-called washdown flushing system, whereby the water flows out of a hole in the back of the bowl and, via a duct beneath the rim, swirls around the entire bowl. This system continues to be used most widely and characterises all WC bowls with rims.

During the course of the last ten years in the world, and the last five years in Italy, a washdown system without rim has taken hold and now characterises all latest generation WCs. By doing away with the rim, the new system enables the water to clean the inner surface of the WC much more effectively. Rimless wc, which initially were only available as wall-hung units, now can also be had in back-to-wall, mini and monoblock configurations.

Flaminia’s GoClean® system

Ceramica Flaminia was one of the first companies to include back-to-wall rimless toilet bowls in its catalogue when, in 2014, it created its innovative patented system GoClean®.

At present, the GoClean® system is also applied to Plus rimless WCs with offset pan connector. These products offer a dual benefit: they can be adapted to existing drainage fixtures, without having to alter the plumbing system, and they are rimless.

In the Flaminia catalogue you will find many GoClean® collections. This innovative flushing system is available in the main collections: App, miniApp, App Urinal; Bonola; Io 2.0; Link and miniLink; Madre; Nile; Pinch; Quick; Spin. The earliest WCs by Flaminia to go GoClean were those in the App collection, soon followed by other models. Nearly all Flaminia wall-hung toilets are GoClean now, and so are most of the back-to-wall models, which goes to show how the benefits of the  GoClean system are increasingly appreciated by designers and consumers alike.
