Bathroom tap: what dimensions to respect

When designing a bathroom, one focuses more on the installation of the sanitary ware and the washbasin and less on the fittings and accessories. Avoiding design errors that can hamper the use of the washbasin mixer, however, is closely linked with the type of basin chosen.

Washbasin and mixer: the perfect couple

Irrespective of design and finishing, type of mixer depends on the washbasin installed. Here is how to choose the washbasin mixer on a case-by-case basis:

– If the washbasin does not have a tap top, the mixer can only be installed in the wall or in the countertop, and not in the ceramic. This is the case of the Spire/Spire+ washbasins, the round App with 40 cm diameter, the Boll, Settecento and Bonola basins.

– If the basin is freestanding, has no tap top, and is installed in the centre of the room, as is the case of the MonoTwin, Monoroll, Monoflag, Monowash models, the mixer will be freestanding; if the column basin is installed close to the wall, the mixer will also be wall-mounted

– If the washbasin has a tap top, the mixer can also be installed directly in the ceramic; many Flaminia models have a tap top, including, to name but a few, Miniwash, Bloom and Fluo.

Washbasin mixer: all sizes

One often wonders about bathroom tap dimensions. Some dimensions are universal and standard for every basin, such as the diameter of the bathroom tap hole. The applicable European standard, EN 31, regulates washbasin dimensions as follows::

-The tap hole for the washbasin must be within a range of 34 to 37 mm, the standard size is usually around 35 mm;

– The drain hole, where the drain plug is installed, must lie within a range of 43 to 48 mm, the standard size being 45 mm;

If these two dimensions conform to the applicable standards, the height of the mixer and the length of the spout should be selected as recommended by the designer, and always after consulting the technical data sheets of both the washbasin and the mixer.

For a comfortable use of the washbasin, the height of both a wall-mounted mixer and a mixer for a countertop washbasin and the distance between the mixer and the washbasin are also critical: these measurements are very important for using the washbasin comfortably and preventing water from splashing out.
