When designing the bathroom of a home or a public place, the applicable regulations must be taken into due account. In the design project for your home, the bathroom cannot open directly onto another room, there has to be a corridor or a hallway in between. The regulations admit one exception: a bathroom can be attached directly to a bedroom.
Anteroom: when is it required in a home?
If there is not enough space to create a corridor, the regulations require that the bathroom be preceded by an anteroom to serve as an intermediate space between the bathroom and the other rooms of the house. The anteroom becomes mandatory if the bathroom opens onto a kitchen or a living room and there is no corridor in between.
Nor is it sufficient to create a bathroom and an anteroom, to comply with the regulations you have to adhere to the criteria defined in Ministerial Decree no. 190 of 5 July 1975 regarding the minimum height and the main hygiene and sanitation requirements for residential premises. The regulations specify the required characteristics and the minimum size of a bathroom and an anteroom, which cannot be less than 1.20 sq.m, with the shorter side no less than 1 m long.
The purpose of the anteroom is to divide the WC area from the rest, and hence low walls cannot be used, full-height walls must be provided, preferably with a door.
Anterooms and public places
Whilst in a private dwelling, the anteroom is only required in a few cases, in public places it is always mandatory, and exceptions or specifications are at the discretion of the city administration.
For public spaces, in fact, anteroom requirements are set out in the Municipal Building Regulations, for both business, retail and food service premises.
