Designing a windowless bathroom, regulation is one of the most delicate aspects to consider. The regulation for windowless bathrooms: here’s what you need to know
The main normative references that regulate the design of windowless bathrooms are included in the Building Regulations and the Hygiene Regulations (in particular, that of the Municipality of residence), but also in the Health Care Ministry Decree of 05/07/1975. The latter, in particular, states that “bathroom must build with natural ventilation (opening windows) or mechanical ventilation systems (fans, exhaust systems) to provide healthy air.”
Municipal regulations goes more in deep. Almost all local regulations state that the main bathroom shall have an openable window, to prevent damp and mould, equal to at least 1/8 of the floor, while windowless bathrooms that “ventilation, if continuous, shall provide at least 6 complete air changes per hour; if intermittent and automatic switch, at least 12 complete air changes per hour”.
Blind bathrooms forced aspiration: all the solutions
Ultimately, one of the fundamental elements in the design of a bathroom is ventilation. To maintain a healthy indoor environment it’s essential to provide an effective and properly ventilation with a window or, in the bathrooms without openings (like in blind baths), with a ventilation system calibrated for the size of the environment. The solutions are two: controlled mechanical ventilation systems (VMC) or natural ventilation systems (ventilation grids).
